Pterostilbene
Brief Introduction:
Pterostilbene is a chemical component that was originally isolated from the red sandalwood tree (Pterocarpus santalinus), hence its name. It belongs to the class of polyhydroxystilbenes and is a methylated derivative of resveratrol. It has a variety of biological activities and is widely used in medicine, food, and cosmetics.
Chemical Structure & Properties:
Chemical Formula: C₁₆H₁₆O₃
Structure: Two benzene rings connected by a vinyl group, with two more methoxy groups (-OCH₃) than resveratrol, which enhances fat solubility and bioavailability, making it easier for the human body to absorb.

Biological Activity & Potential Efficacy:
★ Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory:
- Pterostilbene can reduce oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals, activating antioxidant enzymes (such as SOD), and inhibiting inflammatory factors (such as NF-κB), which may be beneficial for chronic inflammatory diseases (such as arthritis).
★ Anti-cancer Potential:
- Laboratory studies have shown that Pterostilbene can induce apoptosis of cancer cells and inhibit proliferation, and has certain effects on breast cancer, colon cancer, etc., but clinical verification is still needed.
★ Neuroprotection:
- Pterostilbene may improve cognitive function and reduce β-amyloid deposition, and has potential applications in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
★ Metabolic Regulation:
- Pterostilbene activates the AMPK pathway, regulates blood sugar and blood lipids, or has an auxiliary effect on diabetes and obesity.
★ Antibacterial & Anti-aging:
- Pterostilbene inhibits certain bacteria and fungi; in the field of skin care, it is used as an anti-aging ingredient to promote collagen synthesis.
