Brief Introduction:

Ergothioneine (EGT) is a compound discovered in 1909. It was first discovered in a fungus called Claviceps purpurea. The pure product is a white crystal, water-soluble, (0.9mol/L soluble at room temperature), it will not self-oxidize in a strong alkaline solution at physiological pH.

Ergothioneine is a natural antioxidant that can protect cells in the human body and is an important active substance in the body. Natural antioxidants are safe and non-toxic, and have become a research hotspot. As a natural antioxidant, ergothioneine has various physiological functions such as scavenging free radicals, detoxifying, maintaining DNA biosynthesis, and cellular immunity.

Applications:

Scholars from various countries have carried out research on the application of ergothioneine for its remarkable and unique biological functions. Although it needs to be further deepened, it has a good inspiration for its application in various fields. Ergothioneine has a wide range of uses and market prospects in the fields of organ transplantation, cell preservation, medicine, food and beverage, functional food, animal feed, cosmetics and biotechnology.

1. Acts as a Unique Antioxidant:

Ergothioneine is a highly protective, non-toxic natural antioxidant that is not easily oxidized in water, which allows their concentration in certain tissues to reach mmol and stimulates the natural antioxidant defense system of cells . Among the many antioxidants, ergothioneine is particularly unique because ergothioneine can chelate heavy metal ions and protect red blood cells in the body from free radical damage.

2. For Organ Transplantation:

The amount and duration of preservation of existing tissues play a decisive role in the success of organ transplantation. Glutathione is the most widely used antioxidant for organ transplantation, but when it is exposed to the environment, it is easily oxidized, and its antioxidant capacity is greatly reduced even in a refrigerated or liquid environment. Ergothioneine is just like an antioxidant that is stable in aqueous solution and can chelate heavy metal ions. It can be used as a substitute for glutathione in the field of organ protection to better protect transplanted organs.

3. Added to Cosmetics as Skin Protectant:

Ultraviolet UVA in sunlight can penetrate into the dermis of human skin, affecting the growth of epidermal cells, causing surface cells to die of old age, further causing premature aging of the skin, and ultraviolet UVB is more likely to cause skin cancer. Ergothioneine can minimize the formation of active oxygen and protect cells from radiation damage, so ergothioneine can be added to some cosmetics as a skin protectant for the development of outdoor skin care products and protective cosmetics.

4. Applications in Ophthalmology:

Studies in recent years have found that ergothioneine plays a key role in eye protection, so many researchers hope to develop an ophthalmic product to promote the development of ophthalmic treatment operations. Ophthalmic surgery is generally carried out locally, and the water solubility and stability of ergothioneine provide feasibility for this kind of surgery and have great application value.

5. Applications in Other Areas:

Ergothioneine can be applied to many fields due to its excellent properties. For example, it is used in the field of medicine, food, health care products, cosmetics, etc. In the field of medicine, it can be used to treat inflammation, etc., and can be made into tablets, capsules, oral preparations, etc.; in the field of health care products, it can prevent the occurrence of cancer, etc., and can be made into functional foods, functional drinks and other products. It is used for anti-aging and can be made into sunscreen and other products in cosmetic field. With the strengthening of people's awareness of health care, the excellent properties of ergothioneine as a natural antioxidant will gradually be widely recognized and applied by people.
