Beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide
Brief Introduction
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (abbreviated as NAD), also known as pyridine diphosphate (abbreviated as DPN), or co-dehydrogenase I or coenzyme I. In mammals, there are two states of oxidized (NAD+) and reduced (NADH). The oxidized (NAD+) has a maximum ultraviolet absorption spectrum at 260nm. Through various deaminases, it accepts a hydrogen atom from the substrate and One electron, becomes the reduced form (NADH), which has a maximum absorption at 340nm.
β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is used as a coenzyme in redox reactions, as a donor of the ADP ribose moiety in ADP ribosylation reactions, and as a precursor of the second messenger molecule, cyclic ADP ribose. β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide also serves as a substrate for bacterial DNA ligases and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, which use NAD+ to remove acetyl groups from proteins.
